This state of peculiar suspension causes that we do not always know how to study, evaluate and protect it. Therefore, often valuable and experimental objects or urban layouts of the Modernist period deteriorate, are transformed or demolished and replaced by new buildings. This perceptible problem results in both irreversible loss of heritage and negates the principles of cultural continuity. The problem occurs both on a national, European and global scale, so cooperation and international exchange of experience is an excellent starting point for finding solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April 2025 we held the first international conference at the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology on <em>the Heritage of Architecture of the second half of the 20th century.<\/em> At that time we talked about the problems of its preservation in the face of contemporary challenges and about good practices. Contributions from participants from Italy, Portugal, Germany, Turkey, Lithuania and Poland gave our discussion a European dimension, confirming once again that heritage protection is a common problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the forthcoming conference, to be held in April 2026, we would like to consider the problem of valorization in the sense of assessing the value of heritage. Value assessment is the starting point for any conservation or adaptation effort, because it provides answers to three basic questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What should we absolutely preserve and why?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How much can we transform?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What can we possibly demolish?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are therefore questions of value that provide the framework for our conservation and design decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of demolition, remodeling of buildings, over-densification of settlements, redevelopment of parts of cities and neighborhoods opposed to their original compositional assumptions \u2014 we encounter as an everyday experience. Thus, the features of spaces and places that indicate their initial origins are disappearing, and with them the values of authenticity and integrity. Of course, this process applies not only to Modernist sites, but in their particular case we have the fewest tools to successfully stop it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the course of the discussion, therefore, we want to share experiences and explore answers to these and similar questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How to assess the value of the heritage of architecture and urbanism of the second half of the 20th century?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it possible to create a hierarchy of criteria for assessing value and how to apply them to individual buildings and urban layouts?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to assess the tangible and intangible values of the heritage of architecture and urbanism of the second half of the 20th century?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are the categories of authenticity and integrity still applicable and how to interpret them nowadays?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there limits to acceptable transformations of architecture and urban layouts?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it possible to formulate general conservation strategies based on values?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We encourage you to share your knowledge and experiences.<br>We hope that the joint discussion will broaden our understanding of the problems of the heritage of architecture of the second half of the 20th century and contribute to efforts for its preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dziedzictwo architektury drugiej po\u0142owy XX wieku<\/strong> <strong>\u2013 waloryzacja i granice <\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>przekszta\u0142ce\u0144<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Architektura drugiej po\u0142owy XX wieku istnieje pomi\u0119dzy histori\u0105 a tera\u017aniejszo\u015bci\u0105.&nbsp; Stan swoistego zawieszenia sprawia, \u017ce nie zawsze wiemy, jak j\u0105 bada\u0107, ocenia\u0107 i chroni\u0107. Dlatego te\u017c cz\u0119sto warto\u015bciowe i eksperymentalne obiekty czy za\u0142o\u017cenia urbanistyczne okresu modernizmu niszczej\u0105, s\u0105 przekszta\u0142cane lub wyburzane i zast\u0119powane now\u0105 zabudow\u0105. Ten dostrzegalny problem skutkuje zar\u00f3wno bezpowrotn\u0105 utrat\u0105 dziedzictwa, jak i przeczy zasadom ci\u0105g\u0142o\u015bci kulturowej. Problem wyst\u0119puje zar\u00f3wno w skali krajowej, europejskiej, jak i globalnej, dlatego wsp\u00f3\u0142praca i mi\u0119dzynarodowa wymiana do\u015bwiadcze\u0144 jest znakomitym punktem wyj\u015bcia dla poszukiwania rozwi\u0105za\u0144.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>W kwietniu 2025 odby\u0142a si\u0119 pierwsza mi\u0119dzynarodowa konferencja na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki \u015al\u0105skiej po\u015bwi\u0119cona <em>Dziedzictwu architektury 2 po\u0142owy XX wieku.<\/em> Rozmawiali\u015bmy w\u00f3wczas o problemach zwi\u0105zanych z jego ochron\u0105 w obliczu wyzwa\u0144 wsp\u00f3\u0142czesno\u015bci oraz o dobrych praktykach. G\u0142osy uczestnik\u00f3w z W\u0142och, Portugalii, Niemiec, Turcji, Litwy i Polski nada\u0142y naszej dyskusji europejski wymiar potwierdzaj\u0105c zarazem po raz kolejny, i\u017c ochrona dziedzictwa jest problem powszechnym.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Podczas kolejnej konferencji, kt\u00f3ra odb\u0119dzie si\u0119 w kwietniu 2026, b\u0119dziemy chcieli zastanowi\u0107 si\u0119 nad problemem waloryzacji, czyli oceny warto\u015bci dziedzictwa.
